Hush. I am trying. Plus, the show often wants me to think Dean is a dumbass, when he clearly isn't, so I like to think they're just confused.
I also think I'm letting my irritation with fandom affect everything, because honestly, he hasn't actually done much on the show. He generally wanders in, is vaguely useless and/or stupid, and then goes away again. It's fandom that's making him the most important thing ever. (I reserve the right to change my mind the first time I see him again in the new eps. I might only be able to say all this while not watching him.)
Well, yes, but I do think that 4.16 wiped out any accumulated good will I had (he scored minor points in 4.18 for his sneaky "I can't help you, but just so you know" moment), and fandom wanting me to love him just makes me dig in my heels and dislike him MORE.
I also think part of the problem is that I'm supposed to care about him and his arc, but they didn't manage to make me care and then they cut his arc off at the knees by showing the lack of consequences of Uriel's betrayal. I mean, unless we're supposed to read Anna as the hand of divine retribution for siding with Lucifer, there were no consequences of Uriel's fall, and Anna's still wandering around out there with her powers - sure, she's wanted, but there's no indication that the other angels actually are gunning for her. She didn't seem too concerned, anyway. So why am I supposed to worry that Castiel is going to fall?
I know you know all this, but I feel like my rage is totally supported by poor execution in canon. As with so many things on SPN, it's a case of interesting ideas and poor execution.
We'll see how the season plays out. Maybe it will all come together in a way that will make me completely wrong in my irritation.
